What is procedure for the surgery
Genetic testing is categorised into two separate types: Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) and Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD).
PGS analyses biopsied cells from the embryo to screen for possible genetic abnormalities when there are no known potentially inherited disorders.
PGD uses the same process to detect a specific disorder that has a high probability of being passed down from parents to their offspring.
- The process involves removing one or more cells from an invitro Fertilization embryo to test for chromosomal health.
- PGS screens the embryo for normal chromosome numbers.
- Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes making it a total of 46.
- Having an extra or a missing chromosome causes problems.
